room of the week 41 – Katorski

Welcome Belgium with another room of the week by Katorski. Fully packed with synths, this room looks really inviting for gear junkies. We would feel really comfortable having a studio session there. Let’s get into details with the owner himself…

Katorski 02

Hey Maks, its been a while since your first mailout to us. Finally we are glad to have a feature about you on our site! Tell us, when did you start as a producer? “Originally a drummer, i started producing all kinds of music around 2004, releasing on many different labels under several different monikers.”

So you’re 7 years in business now. Tell us more from your vita: “I am currently focussing on my Katorski project, with what i’m releasing on labels such as Lany Recordings, Regalia, Candy and Defected. I’m also producing and engineering for other artist/projects a lot. I’ve always been a gearfreak, and since i started my own bussiness -next to my music activities- in 2010, selling and distributing audiogear at, i became even a bigger nerd and collector. The core of my setup is pretty basic. My laptop running Ableton and plugins -wich if it was all i would have, i could perfectly make music with on it’s own- and next to that all kinds of lovely synths and other hardware toys.”

For all the other gearfreaks visiting our site, what do you use in your studio? “Roland Juno 106 / 6 / 60, Roland Sh-101, Roland JV-1080, Roland TR-606, Roland TR-707, Roland RE-201, Roland MC-303, Korg Poly 800, Korg MS-10 / 20, Korg Prophecy, Moog Prodigy, Moog Little Phatty TE, Realistic Concertmate MG-1, Yamaha DX-7 / 100, Oberheim Matrix 1000 + Access controller, Novation Supernova, Jomox Xbase, Clavia Nord Lead 1, Akai S3000XL, Livid Instruments OhmRGB”

Wow, that’s also a lot. What your favourite one? “Picking a favourite piece of kit would be like asking a mother who’s here favourite kid :)”

Do you also collect vinyl? “I love vinyl but hardly use it while DJ’ing. I just don’t trust the decks in clubs anymore. I do play a lot of it at home and ocassionally sample little bits from vinyl. My collection isn’t superbig, about 700 pieces i think.”

What’s you all time favourite record? “A favourite record… That’s difficult! I’ll have to note down 100’s. I’ll give you the last five i’ve listened too on iTunes :). ‘This Island earth’ by Coldcut, ‘Awakening’ by Ken Ishii, ‘Journeyman’ by Amon Tobin, ‘Rope’ by the Foo Fighters and ‘Brother’s by Stuart Price’s LRD-project.”
