Do you know the feeling? Your in the city, shopping for a suit. At one side of the street you have this prêt-a-porter store, with mass produced dresses at low prices, on the other side a little custom store, where people work with their heart and soul on a single piece, not releasing it to the public until it’s perfect. That comes to my mind when I think of Livid Instruments with their new CNTRL:R.
The medium sized company, based in Austin (Texas), dedicated to creating quality and thoughtful products, are building MIDI-controllers with a great quality. Hand crafted with the best parts and with a touch of soul.
Their newest controller is called CNTRL:R (what’s in a name) and is a contemporary MIDI performance instrument housed in a lightweight aluminum body, ideal for live performance and studio production. This beauty is designed over a one and a half year period with electronic music pioneer Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman -and some other artists on M_nus records- so it’s design is based on a whole lot of hardcore using experience. Combined with Livid’s experience in building top notch controllers, this thing has good genes.
CNTRL:R is designed to provide a high quality controller sized small enough to fit into a backpack, but large enough for extensive hands-on control. So no excuse for large hands and wispy knobs anymore and you are also safe when traveling. I know a lot of guys that need to buy a new controller every 3 months, since their last one broke at the airport or didn’t survive a wild clubnight.
CNTRL:R is actually a whole lot of instruments in one. You can create rhythms, sequence, perform drums and launch clips (the central 4×4 keypad is ideal for that), mix tracks (make a channel-strip with the faders and knobs, for example), and have complete control over your performance, wether for samples, eq’s, effects, lights or midified coffeemachines…
Like more of the Livid products, it has extra high quality faders, push button encoders, rotary knobs, expression pedal inputs, and keypads backed with RGB lights that give you all the controls you need for an interactive performance. With scripts available for Ableton Live and NI Traktor, the CNTRL:R meets the needs of anyone looking to perform electronic music. Of course you can use it with any other software that accepts MIDI and program it the way you like.
Yes, ok, CNTTRL:R is not one of the cheapest products. You can get an Akai APC-40 and APC-20 for the same price, but you’ll have a new best friend for live performances and you’re definitly getting what you pay for. A that won’t break or let you down, made with love and only the best, smoothest working parts. Touch one of the Livid controllers, and be charmed of the quality. You can also customise your controller. The Livid OhmRGB for example, another of their instruments, you can choose the color and style of your faceplate and type of wood for the sides (even some exotics). Everything is possible. Try that with an APC…
